Miniature Wheelie Bins - Branded Stakeholder Gifts

Client: Rent-A-Drum Namibia
Industry: Corporate
Service: Custom Product Design • CAD Modelling • Additive Manufacturing • Branding • Medium-Batch Production

Project Overview

Rent-A-Drum required distinctive gifts for stakeholders attending the Mining Expo. The gifts needed to reflect the company’s services instead of relying on generic promotional products.

Printhoek3D developed a miniature wheelie bin incorporating Rent-A-Drum’s branding and corporate colours. The product was designed as a recognisable display miniature rather than a functional waste container.

The geometry was created as a reusable digital asset specifically for Rent-A-Drum. This allows the company to request additional quantities or colour variations for future events without repeating the full development process.

Traditional manufacturing would require tooling and setup costs that are difficult to justify for customised medium quantities. Additive manufacturing made it practical to produce the miniature bins cost-effectively while maintaining consistent branding and appearance across the batch.

Brake Light Lens - From Obsolete Part to Functional Replacement

Client: Private Client
Industry: Automotive
Service: Reverse Engineering • CAD Reconstruction • Additive Manufacturing • Prototype Manufacturing • Functional Testing

Project Overview

Printhoek 3D was commissioned to recreate an obsolete brake light lens after the original replacement part was no longer readily available.

The project required more than copying the visible outer shape. The lens had to fit into the existing light housing, align with the original mounting points, hold the internal components correctly, and allow light to distribute as intended when powered.

PH3D rebuilt the lens geometry in CAD, preserving the critical features that controlled fit and function. This included the outer shell, internal diffuser geometry, clip positions, mounting clearances, and engagement points.

The replacement was manufactured as separate sections so each feature could perform its role correctly. The parts were printed, test-fitted, adjusted, and checked under power to confirm fit, alignment, and light performance.

Highlights

  • CAD reconstruction of the outer lens and internal geometry
  • Mounting points, clip positions, and clearances preserved
  • Internal diffuser geometry considered for light distribution
  • Separate printed sections used for fit and function
  • Test-fitted and checked under power
  • Replacement designed for function, not only appearance

Impact

This project shows that reverse engineering an automotive light component is not only about reproducing the shape.

By preserving the mounting geometry, internal diffuser features, and light performance requirements, Printhoek 3D produced a functional replacement lens that allowed the original brake light assembly to remain in use.

Indicator Lens Assembly - Reverse Engineered Two-Part Replacement

Client: Private Client
Industry: Automotive
Service: 3D Scanning • Reverse Engineering • CAD Reconstruction • Additive Manufacturing

Project Overview

Printhoek 3D was commissioned to recreate an automotive indicator lens assembly after the original replacement part was no longer readily available.

The part required more than a visual copy. The replacement needed to maintain the outer lens shape, internal orange diffuser section, mounting points, clip positions, clearances, and fit within the original light housing.

PH3D reconstructed the component as a two-part assembly, separating the clear outer section from the orange internal section. This allowed the replacement to preserve the visual function of the original lens while keeping the internal geometry required for mounting and alignment.

Each section was manufactured and test-fitted to confirm that the parts seated correctly, aligned with each other, and could function within the existing vehicle assembly.

Highlights

  • Reverse engineering of an obsolete automotive indicator lens assembly
